Helicopter crash in Ghana on Wednesday: two ministers killed

Ghana's Ministers of Defense and Environment were killed in a helicopter accident on Wednesday, the presidency announced, hours after the army reported the disappearance of an aircraft carrying three crew members and five passengers.
Defense Minister Edward Omane Boamah and Environment Minister Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed were among the victims of the crash in the south of the country, according to Julius Debrah, Chief of Staff to President John Mahama.
“The President and the Government extend their condolences and solidarity to the families of our comrades and fallen servicemen in their service to the Nation,” said Julius Debrah.
The victims also included Alhaji Muniru Muhammad, Deputy National Security Coordinator and former Minister of Agriculture, and Samuel Sarpong, Vice-President of President Mahama's National Democratic Congress (NDC) party.
The Ghanaian Air Force had reported earlier on Wednesday that a military helicopter had disappeared from radar shortly after taking off from Accra, at around 09:00, bound for Obuasi, northwest of the capital. Flags will be flown at half-mast, announced Julius Debrah.
The Presidency reported that John Mahama had suspended all official activities for the day.
