Suspected Islamist attack foiled in Germany this morning in major operation: 27-year-old man arrested

German police announced on Wednesday the arrest of a Bosnian and several searches in western Germany as part of an investigation into the possible financing of an “Islamic terrorist” attack.

The 27-year-old suspect was arrested during an early morning operation by a special intervention unit of the German police (SEK) in the Essen and Dortmund area, the local police and public prosecutor's office said in a statement.

They did not immediately give any further details of the alleged attack, including where it was to be carried out or how it was to be carried out, but said the investigation was ongoing. According to the daily Bild, the suspect had received military training.

Several other searches were carried out in the region at the homes of other people, who are currently considered “witnesses” in the case.

The police investigation began with suspicions of organized fraud, and later led to the identification that the funds collected “were to be used to finance an Islamist terrorist attack”, adds the press release.
